Nella media Valle del Marecchia, al centro della Regione storica del Montefeltro, su un masso imponente di forma romboidale con pareti strapiombanti al suolo, sorge San Leo.

The rocky plaque, calcareous sandstone formation, is the result of the troubled genesis which led to the formation of the landscape of the Val Marecchia, known to geologists as Blanket or casting of Val Marecchia. The plaque limits, in the case of San Leo are fully identifiable and coinciding with the crags and cliffs; the contact with the underlying clay is always evident.

This situation makes San Leo a paradigmatic example for the interpretation of the local geology and summarizes also significant, geomorphological, characteristic phenomena of the Val Marecchia. The extraordinary natural conformation of the place has determined, prehistoric times, the dual reality of fortress equipped by nature and offshore inaccessible and therefore sacred to the gods.
